Cute pic of me standing by my painting “Apocalyptic Unicorn” from the Fabbyloso Unicorn Ar

As a child, I found solace in drawing to keep me company while I actively daydreamed,  inhabiting worlds and scenarios which I drew onto everything in reach: paper, notebooks, the underside of my great grandmother's dining table, and the neighbor's white outdoor furniture, much to their annoyance.

My role as an artist is to be an etheric type of bridge-builder, connecting the realms of the subconscious and translating them into physicality through the process and creation of artworks, working primarily in oil paintings and watercolor illustrations.

Kat Shevchenko was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1979.  She studied traditional illustration at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA, and received her BFA in 2003. After graduating, she returned to her hometown of San Antonio where she further pursued art studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio. During this time she began to work in a narrative pop surrealistic style while employing a range of experimentation with different media.  A turning point occurred in 2006 when she ventured to Austria to study the Old Master’s technique of painting with oils over egg tempera underpaintings. Due to the luminosity and range of details achieved with this technique, she was captivated by the range of effects she could incorporate into her paintings and felt it was an essential method she could implement to fine-tune her artistic process.
Driven by inspiration from the natural world, dreams, and life experiences within her fine art and illustration, she paints images that are fantastical and poignant in layers of cryptic symbolism with endless influences ranging from surrealism, mythology, and science fiction while exploring the visual narratives of the subconscious as it manifests in contemporary existence.
Currently based in San Antonio, TX, along with her studio practice, she is an art educator teaching for nonprofit organizations and has been a co-curator for Triangle Collective, a local women’s artist group.

Artist Statement

My paintings are driven by inspiration from the natural world, dreams and life experiences which are interwoven into a personal mythos that manifests as surrealistic and cryptic imagery that engages the viewer to create their own narrative.
